West Virginia realised its long aimed for dream of separation from Virginia during the Civil War when the counties to the west of the Appalachian mountains seceded from their Confederate parent, Virginia. Today West Virginia is one of the poorest states in the US with an economy dependent on coal, logging, agriculture and services. However the state has a wealth of natural beauty, its stunning mountain scenery and flowing rivers and streams a magnet for outdoor recreation adventurers. Rafting, rock climbing, fishing, skiing and hunting are all popular attractions that draw visitors to this crossroads state. West Virginia enjoys a pleasantly mild year round climate and its proximity to larger Eastern cities makes it a great place to escape the smog and impersonality of the rat race. City slickers may find the rustic charms of the locals quant, but old fashioned values are alive and well in this friendly state with tourists enjoying their hospitality.
