Location of the first English colony in the New World, named in honour of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I, Virginia is one of the nation’s most historic and visited states. As well as being rich in history the state boasts an incredibly diverse landscape, from the romantic Shenandoah Valley down rolling hill country through plains that stretch to the country’s largest estuary; Chesapeake Bay, famed for its oysters and site of the Navy’s largest Atlantic base at Norfolk. Virginia’s capital Richmond also served as Confederate capital and many of the most important events of the Civil War occurred in the state. The proximity of Washington DC has attracted many Federal agencies with The Pentagon being the most famous located within Virginia. The state still has an impressive agricultural output and grows the nation’s favourite tobacco, however Virginia’s largest export is now computer chips! From awe inspiring valleys to its popular beaches and numerous battleground sites, the state has something for everyone.
