
The Deep South state of South Carolina is one of the original 13 states of the union and was the first to secede following Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 election victory. The Confederate shelling of the Union Fort Sumter on 12th April 1961 was the opening shot of the Civil War. A hot bed of secessionism South Carolina struggled to de-segregate and the Bible Belt state is still proud of its rebellious past.
