The lowland Deep South state of Mississippi is dominated by the mighty river that the state is named after, whose regular floods have brought the state wealth with its fertile soil, but also take it away with its frequent devastating floods. The enthusiastic former Confederate state is still proud of its Civil War past and its legacy can still be felt. During a time when ‘Cotton was King’ the state’s economy flourished on the back of slave labour but following the emancipation of the slaves the state has been one of America’s poorest. Despite this, the hot and humid state makes an enjoyable holiday spot for people who come to forget life in the forested plains and a relaxed way of like that reminds others of a bye gone era that is fading into history, and to enjoy the many casinos along the river and coastal fringe. The locals are warm like their climate and pleased to see visitors.
