The rich, densely populated, highly educated Commonwealth of Massachusetts has always played an important part in the development of the USA and still does today. The liberal traditions of the state began when the non-conformist Pilgrim Fathers first stepped ashore in 1620 in search of religious freedom. The hard working Puritans soon flourished and during the centuries the state went from being dependent on agriculture, to manufacturing and is now a primary service economy. The American Revolution’s first spark ignited with the Boston Tea Party and the state was scene to heavy fighting during that period. Today visitors come to enjoy Massachusetts’s cultural and historical sites, its educational facilities, of which Harvard is the most famous and also to sample sophisticated New England cuisine. Boston has a vibrant nightlife with attractions to match any taste.
