The US’s most north easterly state is the New England state of Maine, a picturesque and rugged place where visitors are drawn to its natural beauty, rugged coastline and excellent seafood restaurants. The state gained independence from Massachusetts in 1820 and is the only state to declare war on a foreign country, Great Britain in 1839. Agriculture makes an important contribution of the state economy with blueberries and potatoes thriving in the states cooler climate. Naval ship building is a key industry although the states maritime industry is in decline. The states reputation for clams and lobsters is justified as the rugged coastline and temperature provide a perfect habitat for these tasty treats. The states winters can be severe, however summer brings long days with brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures.

Maine’s pristine forests are a mecca for hunters who are well catered for with excellent lodges and facilities. Come see for yourself.
Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community Village is a living reminder of the Shaker’s way of life that helped shape the modern America.
Maine State Aquarium has a wonderful display showing the watery world of Maine’s sea creatures. Definite family fun.

While in Maine you just have to sample some local cuisine. Seafood Chowder, lobsters, clams, mussels followed by blueberry pie are all made with fresh local ingredients.
